PESI Goals and Action Plan Update

As we wind down 2020, we are starting to look forward to the new year, and with that comes a review of our annual goals and action plan. Even with so many challenges this year, we have been very successful in accomplishing some of our goals and actions. We hope you will join us at our next meeting (date TBD – late November or early December) to reflect on our last year and work on renewing goals and actions for 2021.

Our 2020 Action Plan included:

  1. Support TUSD Science Center in K-8 science curricula that provides an equitable science program for all students throughout the district.  Through our volunteers assisting with the new science curriculum materials, we will have provided more than 500 hours of support through this year. With these efforts, we are contributing to high quality science curriculum materials and resources being provided for every K-8 student in TUSD.
  2. Support and assist with teacher professional development for classroom implementation of core science curriculum. PESI and Cooper Center for Environmental Learning collaborated to provide two workshops in spring 2020 focused on helping teachers plan for implementation of science instruction that meets the new AZ State Science Standards. Additionally, teachers increased their knowledge of 3-dimensional and phenomena-based science instruction, using best practices in science education to engage students and help them make sense of their world. In October-November 2020, PESI Instructors and Cooper Center staff will facilitate a unique nature journaling workshop that will promote the intersections of science, art, and literacy. K-8 teachers were invited to register and within 3 days, the workshop was filled! Even through virtual learning experiences, educators are excited to learn more about using nature observation journaling, writing, and reading, knowing the skills and strategies they learn will, in turn, motivate their students to connect with their environment.
  3. Identify and support leadership development of science educators. In our spring 2020 workshops at Cooper Center, we were able to fund an “Instructor Shadow” position so that an aspiring teacher could collaborate and learn from the PESI instructors responsible for the workshops. We’re happy to report that our new colleague is now one of our regular instructors for the Observing Nature workshop, and we have a new “Instructor Shadow” developing leadership skills in this workshop.
  4. Seek grant-funded opportunities to provide effective science education for all students. PESI completed a grant project provided by the AZ Department of Forestry and Fire Management. This 2-year program supported teachers and promoted student learning about benefits of trees and water management issues. We will be looking for a future grant opportunity in 2021.
  5. Explore partnerships in collaboration with network partners, a colloquium for school administrators focused on current best practices in science education. This goal will be carried over into 2021 as we know how important it is for school and district leadership to have an active role in the pursuit of equitable science instruction for every student.
  6. Promote integration of science literacy, utilizing various texts and hands on resources. Our workshops include the importance of integration, with many strategies presented for teachers to implement best practices in their classrooms.
  7. Increase student engagement through Science/STEM literacy. We work towards this goal by supporting teachers in their hard work to engage students in science education. We are focused on every student receiving science instruction that promotes active engagement with the world and scientific endeavors.

Supporting Teachers
Tree Study at Pistor Middle School
Pistor Middle School teacher, Ms. Sonia Marya, and students from her 6th grade science classes participated in the US Forest Service/Department of Forestry and Fire Management/PESI Ecosystems Grant. Here is an example of a presentation students created to inform incoming 5th grade students about some of their science learning. Students clearly enjoyed their hands-on experiences, and were proud to share the importance of trees with younger students.
Ecosystems Workshop – Urban Heat Effect
PESI Community Partner, Joaquin M. from Watershed Management Group, demonstrates the Urban Heat Effect to Cohort 1 teachers on Day 2 of the Ecosystems Grant Workshop.
Supporting Local School Districts
PESI Volunteers at the Tucson Unified School District Science Resource Center
PESI has been collaborating with TUSD to assist in preparing new K-8 science kits to be ready for classroom use. TUSD was able to purchase new curriculum kit resources – the challenge became apparent when hundreds of boxes of science kit materials were delivered to the Science Resource Center. In order to be ready for teachers and students to use them, the kits needed to be repackaged for the science kit delivery system that has been established at the Science Resource Center since the early 1990s. PESI volunteers have accomplished the following:
  • Almost 500 volunteer hours have been provided in the last 3 months by PESI and other community volunteers!
  • 1, 128 boxes full of science materials for grades K-8 will be completed when all done. T
Kits will be delivered to schools and classrooms so that all TUSD students will have access to high quality science curriculum.

The work continues! The SRC still has many tasks ahead, such as equipment labeling, re-boxing, and refurbishing. If you are interested and have the time to help Mondays-Fridays, 8:00-4:00, please contact pesitucson@gmail.com

AZ Department of Education Science Resources
When was the last time you visited our AZ Department of Education Science web pages? The ADE Science Team stays very busy creating, presenting, and posting webinars, workshops, and resources that are free for educators.

Of course, the ‘new’ science standards are now in full implementation phase and all teachers should be using these as guidance for their planning and instruction. Utilizing the 3-dimensions, these standards are designed to engage all students in figuring out phenomena and developing skills by using the science and engineering practices.

Here are some especially helpful resources you might be interested in – all are free.
  • Vertical Progressions of the crosscutting concepts and science and engineering practices clearly indicate the expectations for students in grade level bands.
  • Recorded Webinars include the recorded webinar, or a PDF version of the PPT, as well as a resource page. Topics include Phenomena-based 3-Dimensional Instruction, Crosscutting Concepts, and Constructing Explanations & Arguing from Evidence.
  • General science assessment information page, including a timeline and sample test items.
  • Virtual Learning Resources, a matrix of instructional strategies and weblinks to help you navigate teaching in distance learning.

These are only a few of the incredible array of science education resources that are now available for educators and parents. https://www.azed.gov/standards-practices/k-12standards/standards-science

PESI Website and Facebook Page
We love our new looks at our website and Facebook page! We hope you will visit both often! Our webmistress, Barbara Casanova, has done a phenomenal job of keeping our website up to date and interesting with news and photos. You’ll also find helpful resources there, whether you’re an educator looking for the latest instructional resources to help with virtual learning, or a parent looking for science instruction information to help your child at home. Our Facebook coordinator, Ginny Beal, keeps the FB pages vibrant with science information, resources, and PESI events – she makes sure there’s always something new for you to check out. We also invite you to share science education information that you think would be helpful for educators and parents .

Science At Home

BirdsEye

This app is linked to the eBird citizen science project and was started by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Naturalist Society.  The goal is to compile data on bird abundance and distribution by collection observational data from birdwatchers across the world.  To participle, download the app and enter the location, date, and time of observation.  Then create an account with eBird (the app will direct you) and start syncing your observations!

The app is free in both the AppStpore and GooglePlay Store but offers in-app purchases if you want to take your birding further.
